The Art of Curating Luxury Wardrobes for Motherhood
by Fatma Rashid
When The Maternity Project began, it was never meant to simply offer clothing. It was created to become a space where mothers feel seen, understood, and supported through one of the most transformative periods of their lives.
While my own journey into motherhood helped shape the vision, TMP has truly been built through the shared experiences of a growing community of mothers who have trusted us and openly shared their realities with us. Through conversations, fittings, and honest feedback, we quickly realised something important, motherhood wardrobes should never feel temporary. They should feel intentional, empowering, and aligned with who a woman is.
This belief is why curation sits at the heart of everything we do.
Why Curating Matters
Many mothers in our community tell us the same story: maternity clothing often feels like a short-term solution. Pieces are bought for a few months and then slowly disappear from wardrobes once pregnancy ends. We wanted to challenge that cycle. At TMP, we believe motherhood is not a phase that requires a separate wardrobe. It is a life stage that deserves clothing that evolves alongside a woman’s body, lifestyle, and identity through pregnancy, postpartum, and the years that follow.
Our community has also reshaped how we define postpartum. Again and again, mothers remind us that postpartum is not limited to the first 40 days after birth or what is also now framed as the fourth trimester. It is a long and deeply personal transition that can last for years, whether recovering from natural delivery or a C-section. These shared experiences guide how we carefully select pieces that support comfort, recovery, and confidence without compromising style. And so, we have come up with 5 guiding pillars that are integral to our curation.
Pillar 01: Shapes That Adapt to Every Stage
We prioritise silhouettes that move naturally with the body throughout pregnancy and postpartum. Within our community, we see how women embrace pregnancy differently. Some love highlighting their growing bellies, while others feel more comfortable in fluid, relaxed shapes. Our goal is to honour both. One mother once shared with us that her favourite TMP dress was the first piece that made her feel elegant at seven months pregnant and equally confident returning to work a year later. These are the pieces we strive to find, garments that continue to live with women and flatter them, long after pregnancy ends.
Pillar 02: Fabrics That Support Comfort and Wellbeing
Fabric becomes deeply personal during motherhood. Many women tell us how dramatically their sensitivity to materials changes during pregnancy and recovery.
We prioritise breathable, lightweight, and stretch-friendly fabrics that balance flexibility with structure. The mesh jersey fabric that is often seen in our Nanushka collections has become one of our community’s favorites for this exact reason. Not only is it super light on the body, it is equally flattering across different stages of motherhood.
We also intentionally prioritise natural fibres such as 100% cotton, reflected in pieces like our Desmond and Dempsey sets. As conversations around microplastics in the placenta continue to grow, many mothers within our community have expressed a desire to reduce synthetic exposure wherever possible. These shared concerns continue to shape our fabric choices.
Pillar 03: Style Diversity That Protects Identity
One of the most inspiring things we witness within our community is how strongly women hold onto their personal style during motherhood.
We often hear mothers say, “I didn’t want motherhood to replace my style but I wanted it to evolve with me.”
Our collections are curated to reflect that belief, balancing feminine, minimalist, maximalist, and edgy aesthetics so women can continue expressing themselves authentically..
Pillar 04: Sizing That Moves With Women
Fluctuating body sizes are one of the most common challenges mothers share with us. Many speak about the emotional weight of clothing no longer fitting during periods of physical change.
We carefully evaluate how each piece performs when sizing up during pregnancy and how it transitions postpartum. Our goal is to minimise alterations and allow women to continue wearing and loving the pieces they invest in across multiple stages.
Pillar 05: Timelessness That Encourages Meaningful Investment
Mothers within our community consistently express a desire to shop more intentionally, choosing fewer pieces that hold lasting value rather than wardrobes built around temporary trends.
This is why timeless design is a non-negotiable part of our curation. We prioritise refined tailoring, enduring fabrics, and versatile styling that allow garments to remain relevant season after season.
Curation as a Shared Journey
At TMP, curation is shaped by listening. Every collection reflects the stories, needs, and trust shared by the mothers who are part of our community.
Together, we are redefining what motherhood wardrobes can look and feel like; wardrobes that evolve with women, honour their changing bodies, and support their confidence long after pregnancy ends.
